Terms of use.
Last updated September 30, 2026
These terms describe the Wiser service, website, and content provided by Collective Betterment Research Institute LLC. The license to the iPhone app is governed by Apple's Standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement (EULA). These service terms supplement that license; they do not replace it. If they conflict about the app license, the Standard EULA controls. App Store purchases are also subject to the Apple Media Services Terms and Conditions and applicable consumer law.
What Wiser does
Wiser is an alarm clock that introduces ideas from philosophy and literature through short lessons. An active membership (trial, subscription, or lifetime purchase) is required to create, enable, or reschedule an alarm, and to replay lesson audio. Past heard lesson text and book or audiobook links remain accessible without membership. You can set different alarm times for different days, with one alarm per local calendar day. Wiser assigns one randomly selected lesson per local alarm day and uses the whole bundled library before starting a new cycle. Snooze and replay do not select another lesson. Lessons and audio are prepared in advance; Wiser does not require an account or generate content when your alarm rings.
Alarms and your device
Wiser uses Apple's alarm system. Your iPhone must be powered on, with alarm access enabled and a suitable volume. Check these settings and test your alarm after setup or important device changes. Device or software problems can affect any alarm; use a backup when a missed alarm could have serious consequences.
Ending paid access does not cancel an alarm already scheduled with iOS. An already scheduled narrated alarm may still ring with its prepared audio. Stop, optional five-minute Snooze, disabling, and deletion remain available. Saving changes to the alarm’s time, repeat days, label, opening sound, or Snooze setting requires active membership.
Wiser prepares a limited number of upcoming alarms and refreshes them when iOS allows it to run. Background updates are not guaranteed. Open Wiser regularly and after travel, time-zone, permission, iOS, or device changes, and confirm the next alarm. Wiser does not guarantee indefinite unattended scheduling.
Purchases and free trials
US pricing:
- Annual: seven days free for eligible new subscribers, then $24.99 per year, renewing automatically.
- Monthly: $3.99 charged when you confirm, then every month, renewing automatically. No introductory trial.
- Lifetime: $79.99 charged once when you confirm, without a trial or automatic renewal.
Apple shows the actual localized price, billing period, trial eligibility, and applicable taxes before you confirm. That offer controls your purchase. To start the seven-day annual trial, choose the annual plan and confirm with Apple. Downloading Wiser alone does not start a trial or authorize a charge. If you do not cancel in time, Apple charges the annual price when the trial ends. A trial is available only when Apple confirms your eligibility. Apple permits one introductory offer per subscription group; switching between Wiser's monthly and annual plans does not provide another trial.
Subscriptions renew automatically unless canceled. To avoid the next charge, cancel at least 24 hours before the trial or current subscription period ends. Cancel in iPhone Settings > your name > Subscriptions. Deleting Wiser does not cancel your subscription. Cancellation turns off renewal; Apple's subscription screen shows the access end date.
Use Restore Purchases in Wiser with the Apple Account used to buy access. Buying or restoring access requires Apple's services and an internet connection. Apple handles payments and refund requests. See Apple's cancellation instructions and refund instructions. Your rights under applicable consumer law still apply.
Lifetime access
A lifetime purchase unlocks Wiser's narrated-alarm and audio-replay features, including future library additions made available in this iOS app, without recurring Wiser charges or a scheduled expiration. It lasts for the commercial lifetime of the Wiser iOS product. This does not mean the lifetime of the purchaser, and it does not promise indefinite operation, support for every future device, or a fixed number of new lessons.
We will not use a rename or a substantially equivalent replacement to avoid that commitment. Content may need to change for editorial, rights, legal, or technical reasons. If Wiser is permanently discontinued, this does not remove any rights or remedies the law gives you.
Buying lifetime access does not automatically cancel an existing subscription. Cancel the renewing subscription through Apple to avoid another subscription charge.
Lessons and wellbeing
Wiser aims to make ideas useful in everyday life. Its lessons are general education, not therapy, diagnosis, medical treatment, or personalized professional advice. We do not promise particular health or wellbeing outcomes.
Each short lesson selects and simplifies an idea from a larger work. We identify the author and source, but reasonable interpretations can differ. The book provides more context than a one-minute lesson can.
How the content is made
Wiser's explanations are prepared before release. AI tools can assist with scripts and narration; the app plays finished recordings and does not provide a live AI adviser. The narrator is a synthetic voice reading Wiser's commentary, not the historical author.
Discussing a book does not imply endorsement by its author, translator, publisher, estate, or narrator. We do not claim exclusive rights to public-domain source works. Rights in Wiser's original software, scripts, recordings, artwork, and marks are reserved where applicable; third-party rights remain with their owners.
Using Wiser and its website
You may use Wiser for personal purposes under Apple's app license, and browse or listen to the website sample for personal use. Do not unlawfully copy or redistribute protected recordings or scripts, bypass purchase controls, interfere with the app or website, or infringe another person's rights. Uses and exceptions permitted by applicable law remain available.
Books, audiobooks, and other links
Retailer links are optional and free to open. Books and audiobooks are separate purchases under the retailer's prices, terms, and privacy practices. Wiser does not control those transactions or outside websites.
Some links may earn Wiser a commission from a qualifying purchase. We disclose that relationship near the links.
Availability, changes, and your rights
Wiser may update its software, content, and website for editorial, technical, rights, legal, or security reasons. Device compatibility and third-party services can change. We do not guarantee error-free operation or that every lesson or external link will remain available.
To the extent permitted by law, Wiser and its website are provided “as is” and “as available.” Nothing in these terms excludes a warranty, liability, refund right, or other consumer protection that cannot legally be excluded. Apple's standard app license contains additional terms applicable to the app.
We will update the date when these terms change and provide additional notice where required. Changes will not retroactively reduce an existing lifetime purchase or remove rights already granted by law.
